Best Non-toxic Body Pillows for Pregnancy 2020. Top 7 Pillows Reviewed

February 12, 2020

Finding it hard to accept pregnancy as a beautiful experience, what with severe back pains and lack of sleep? Don’t lose sleep over pregnancy aches anymore. Finding the best non-toxic body pillow for pregnancy is the key to sleep comfortably.

They come in many shapes and sizes; like the wedge pillow for under the tummy, a total body pillow for behind the back, a regular supplement body pillow, and a tummy sleeping cushion.

Best Total Body Pillows

These body pillows are like sleeping on giant fluffy clouds, which is why they’re my favorite kind of pregnancy pillow or pillow in general! They provide complete support all around the body’s form, and it doesn’t matter if you’re short or tall because this comfortable non-toxic body pillow truly does it all.

1. Leachco Snoogle Total Body Pillow– Under $60

What I love about it

This is the best-selling total body pillow on Amazon, and for good reason. This one-piece pillow replaces using multiple pillows and it stays in one place rather than spreading all around the bed. Best of all, it gives you terrific comfort without any extra uncomfortable body heat.

Things to keep in mind

Changing the case for this huge pillow is not the easiest thing in the world, so that’s something to keep in mind when you need to wash it. These pillows also tend to be slightly pricey, so consider what fits within your budget in order to get a good night’s sleep.

Additional Specs

The Leachco Snoogle pillow’s design was developed by a registered nurse who’s also a mom. As noted before, it’s a pretty large pillow considering its size is about 60 x 25 x 7 inches and it weighs around five and a half pounds, but it’s perfect for sleeping and relaxing.

2. Today’s Mom Cozy Cuddler Pregnancy Pillow– Under $80

What I love about it

This non-toxic body pillow is perfect for those who always wake up with sore shoulders since it includes a shoulder comfort system. I especially like support on my back. This will help both your back and your belly while cradling your body and giving you constant comfort.

Things to keep in mind

While the machine washable cover comes off, fitting it back is a bit of a task, not to mention the generously large size weighing in at 10 pounds. If you are not a side or tummy sleeper, then this pillow may not be too ideal for you. Additionally, while it is manufactured in the USA, unfortunately this pillow is not organic.

Additional Specs

The comfortable and unique Today’s Mom Cozy Cuddler pillow’s size is about 56 x 9 x 32 inches, and its material is made from 50% polyester and 50% cotton. It also has a 200 thread count.

3. PharMeDoc Total Body Pregnancy Pillow – Under $40

What I love about it

This particular body pillow boasts its name as the world’s most comfortable maternity pillow because of its firm and supportive padding. With its ergonomic U-shaped design and premium material, you can say goodbye to sore necks, shoulders, insomnia, and lower back pain, which people commonly lose sleep over.

Things to keep in mind

Although the PharMeDoc Body pillow is a fantastic and ideal choice for side and back sleepers, it is on the more expensive side. Yet, in my opinion, it is well worth the money if you really wish to have a comfortable experience and good night’s sleep without tossing and turning.

Later Edit: While the pillow covers are 100% cotton, the Polyfill doesn’t seem to be as safe as we originally thought, as one customer reports that it does come with a ‘Prop 65’ warning in California. This means it is not as safe and harmless as we originally thought it was. I have written to the company, and have not heard back.

Additional Specs

The 100% cotton cover and lush interior is Polyfill, lead, phthalate, and BPA free which is a really a big win in my book (Please note above ‘Later Edit’), since I care a lot about my health and safety especially when I’m pregnant.

Additionally, the size is around 60 x 24 x 7 inches and weighs a good seven pounds.

Best Regular (non-pregnancy) Body Pillows

I think body pillows are awesome for cuddling. They’re great for those like me who are side sleepers and tummy sleepers. Body pillows usually come in a straight or flexible style that runs lengthwise against your body. They can also help you avoid neck, back, and hip aches.

Best of all, they’re way more economical than specially designed pregnancy pillows, and many pregnant women swear that they’re almost, if not as good.

4. AllerEase Body Pillow– Under $30

What I love about it

This soft hypoallergenic body pillow is terrific at blocking out tiny particles that can trigger any allergies. Using multiple pillows can be tricky because they can spread around the bed, but non-toxic body pillows are a single unit that stay in one place.

Things to keep in mind

Body pillows can come in big sizes, so I wouldn’t recommend one unless you have a large bed. Additionally, the Aller-Ease Body Pillow doesn’t come with a case, so I’d make sure to buy one for it, since you can’t easily throw a body pillow into a washing machine.

Additional Specs

Made out of 100% breathable cotton fabric with a hypoallergenic fiber fill, the pillow’s size is about 20 inches by 54 inches. If you’re cautious about the pillows you buy, this pillow is third party lab tested and backed by the Good Housekeeping Seal’s two year limited warranty.

Best Wedge Pillow

Pregnancy wedge pillows are mainly for side sleepers, and since they usually come small, it makes them pretty portable so you can take them anywhere. You can either place it under your belly or you can place it in between your legs to straighten out your back, hips, and legs.

5. Boppy Pregnancy Wedge – Under $20

What I love about it

The Boppy pregnancy wedge is a firm cushion that’s made to support your back and your belly. The slipcover is easy to remove and wash so there’s no frustration. Also, this non-toxic body pillow is quite inexpensive and doesn’t take up a lot of space compared to full and total body pillows.

Things to keep in Mind

While the pillow covers are 100% cotton, the poly fill comes with a Polyurethane filling, which is not safe. I have written to the company to confirm, and have not heard back. However, as there is a cotton zipper cover over the foam, the foam part of the pillow doesn’t touch your skin directly.

Additional Specs

This all-cotton wedge is very lightweight at 3.2 ounces and is 15 x 12 x 4 inches. The slipcover is made from Pima cotton and is machine washable. It’s also very versatile, so you can use it pretty much anyway you like or anywhere you need comfort and support.

Best Tummy Sleeping Cushion

It can be very hard to sleep on your tummy while pregnant, especially during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Tummy sleeping cushions are an excellent choice for mothers who love to sleep on their bellies. These cushions keep your belly safely propped up and cushioned while keeping you comfortable.

6. Earthlite Pregnancy Cushion– Under $300

What I love about it

You don’t have to worry about problems that might come with sleeping on your belly with this great pregnancy cushion. It’s specifically designed to support your abdomen and it helps with lower back problems. This is actually a massage cushion for pregnant women, but also a great choice for tummy sleepers. Of course, such a luxury does come with quite a price tag.

Things to keep in mind

This pregnancy cushion is mainly for those who are tummy sleepers. It is not really applicable to side and back sleepers. Also, this cushion isn’t really something you can place easily in your bed, since it is made more for a massaging function rather than a pillow function.

Additional Specs

This is a fairly large cushion at 41 x 21 x 8 inches with pockets. The belly section is around 17 x 15 inches and the breast section is seven inches. The cushion is made of CFC-free urethane foam and NatursoftTM upholstery which makes it especially comfortable and supportive.

Conclusion

To make sure you get long and healthy nights of sleep, try and find the best non-toxic body pillow for pregnancy that suits your needs and takes away your aches and pains. With these non-toxic pregnancy pillow options, say hello to a good night’s sleep and to your sanity once again.

You might benefit further from using them alongside maternity support belts, which further decrease aches and actually improve your posture during pregnancy. You’ll thanks me once the baby is born.

    Hi!

Very helpful article, thank you. I found an all-natural body pillow that I absolutely love. It’s made with an organic cotton cover and it’s stuffed with chemical-free wool batting. It’s 100% all-natural, and even smells good because of the wool. I highly recommend it. I’m not expecting, but I do use it every night and i’m sure that when I am, this will be a welcome companion in my bed! It’s more expensive then some of the others you’re recommending but it’s worth every penny. The brand is Kakun – kakunsleep.com. I hope this helps some of you!

    Hello,
You have the Boppy pregnancy wedge pillow recommended but it is made out of 100% polyurethane. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that long-term exposure to polyurethane foam may cause Cancer, Infertility & Miscarriages, Autoimmune Issues, Neurological Disorders, Child Behavior Issues, Allergies, and Asthma.

      Hi Asefa,
Thank you for your comment. The Boppy pillow is in fact filled with foam. I have made the necessary edits, mentioning this in the article, and have also written to the company to get their word on it.
Upon research, there are customers who mention that as the pillow comes with a cotton slip cover, skin does not directly touch the foam. While this might be a tolerable risk for some, given how popular the pillow is compared to others in it’s range, there is real truth to your concern.
Thank you for bringing it up and putting light on something to be kept very much in mind before deciding whether to make the purchase.

When you say these are “non-toxic”, what are you basing that on? In particular the Leachco Snoogle Total Body Pillow

    • Shobita Ravichandran

      Hi Jenna,
As for the Leachco Snoogle Total Body Pillow, when I say that it is non-toxic, I mean that there are no flame retardants or harmful chemicals used in the manufacture of the pillow.
This can be confirmed from their website, where they state the following:(https://leachco.com/pages/customer-care)

“Do Leachco products contain flame retardants or PBDE?

No, Leachco Products do NOT contain flame retardants or PBDE.

Leachco prides itself on maintaining the highest possible industry standards. Our fabrics and fillings are exempt from the California Bureau of Home Furnishings Technical Bulletin 117. Leachco products have never contained flame retardants or PBDE. ”

Hope this helps, and good luck with your search.
