  1. Hello,
I was curious what makes IKEA’s Antilop high chair toxic or if you have looked into the Poppy high chair by Phil &Ted.

    • Hi Renae,
The ikea Antilop high chair is made of polypropylene, which is generally not as safe as solid wood and other natural materials, and certain grades of polypropylene do leach chemicals and toxins. That being said, this chair uses BPA free plastic, which is much better that traditional cheap plastics. However, they do not mention if it is phthalate and PVC free, which is concerning, and where possible I would choose natural materials over plastic if possible.

As for the Poppy High chair, it is also made with polypropylene, and with an aerocore seat which is soft and spongy. Aerocore is a safe non-toxic plastic as well. So all in all this is a good high chair and does pass ASTM certifications, so I would give it a green signal, but with a small caveat that solid wood (with a non-toxic finish) is still superior to plastic IMO. But if you are going for a plastic option due to it’s being light weight, etc., the Poppy High chair by Phil & Ted is a good value pick.

Hope this helps. Let us know what you choose to go for.

I hadn’t really looked into it at the time of this article, but a quick bit of search makes it appear very promising, as it is made of good quality real wood which has been treated. Their website also provides the below information, which is very reassuring:

Eco-friendly. Cultivated beech wood has been carefully selected to keep the forests healthy and sustainably productive.
Safety Standards. Beyond Junior Y Chair meets and complies with ASTM F404 & HR 4040 standards and contains no harmful substances, such as BPA, Phthalate, PVC.

      Hope this helps.
      Good luck with your search
